Velites Quad Ultra: review, benefits and when they're your best option

quad-ultra-grips-benefits-use

The Velites Quad Ultra are the Velites' flagship grips in the chalk-free category , and their distinguishing feature is clear: they provide so much grip they seem to stick to the bar. But that gripping power isn't ideal for everyone or every type of bar. In this analysis we tell you exactly what they do well, in which scenarios they stand out, in which it makes more sense to choose another model and what concrete results athletes achieve when using them daily.

If you train pull-ups, toes-to-bar, muscle-ups or long ring routines and you're frustrated by losing time to step down for chalk, the Quad Ultra are designed exactly for you. If your bar is rough or you usually train with chalk, this post will help you decide whether they are really your option or if you have better alternatives within the Velites range.

What makes the Quad Ultra different?

The Quad Ultra incorporate a series of technical features that differentiate them from other chalk-free grips on the market.

Before diving into results and comparisons, it's useful to understand what you have in your hands (no pun intended): high-quality, maximum-durability velcro, 3D rubber reinforcement, a patented 1.2 mm layer that's very spongy and friction-resistant, 1.2 mm inner suede that absorbs sweat, a nylon strap with a 4 mm stainless steel buckle and an extra-wide 5.5 cm wrist protection.

The pack also includes fabric wrist bands and a breathable (odor-resistant) carry bag so you can always keep them in your backpack.

Chalk-free grip: the technology behind it

Unlike other chalk-free grips that depend on the material's natural tack, the Quad Ultra stick to the bar from the first moment thanks to its patented 1.2 mm Velites-textured layer. You feel secure from the first rep, you can forget about your hands and focus 100% on technique.

You'll achieve movements that used to cost you twice the effort, and users say they can hang twice as long and do more repetitions.

Less forearm fatigue

By having such a firm and "sticky" grip, your forearms work much less to keep you hanging. This lets you save energy for other exercises like kettlebells or barbell weightlifting. In mixed WODs, that difference is especially noticeable when there are push or pull exercises following the gymnastics block.

Forget chalk (and save real time)

No more cracked, dry hands.

With the Quad Ultra you don't need chalk, which allows you to chain many more reps without losing time. It's estimated you can gain up to one minute per ten minutes of training simply by not having to step down for chalk. That extra time can be the difference between winning a WOD or missing the cut in a competition.

Durability and construction

They are built to last.

They are high-end grips capable of withstanding the most intense and demanding training, becoming your best ally in competition. The reinforced velcro and the nylon strap with stainless steel buckle are the components that most extend their lifespan compared to standard grips.

Real results with the Quad Ultra

Until the Quad Ultra launch, the Quad Carbon were our most highly rated grips for their hole-free design and carbon-fiber layer. To measure the real quality leap of the new Quad Ultra, we tested results with professional athletes and the data speaks for itself:

  • Toes-to-bar unbroken: 35% more unbroken repetitions.
  • Muscle-ups unbroken: 40% more unbroken repetitions.
  • Kipping pull-ups: 25% more total volume.
  • Long WODs: in 20-minute workouts with 100 pull-ups, performance improved by 15%.

The secret behind these figures is simple: no athlete had to let go of the bar to apply chalk. Half of them also managed to perform movements that previously eluded them precisely because forearm fatigue arrived before the actual target muscle fatigue.

Quad Ultra vs Quad Carbon: which to choose?

It's the most frequent question among those who already know the Velites range. Both are premium grips, but they are designed for different use cases:

  • Quad Ultra (chalk-free): maximum grip without chalk. Designed for athletes who prefer not to use chalk or train on clean, predictable bars. Its patented 1.2 mm layer is responsible for the "sticky" effect.
  • Quad Carbon (with chalk): carbon-fiber layer optimized for use with chalk. Designed for environments with rough bars, aggressive knurling and training where chalk is part of the routine.

In practice: if your routine involves avoiding chalk and your bar tends to be clean, the Quad Ultra will give you better performance. If you train in chalk-loving boxes or your rig has aggressive knurling, the Quad Carbon will be more comfortable in long sessions.

Who are the Quad Ultra designed for?

The Quad Ultra are a premium product with a clear target audience. I'll explain which profiles they particularly stand out for and, also, when it's advisable to look at other models in the range.

The advanced CrossFit athlete

If you accumulate more than 50 pull-ups per session, string together long toes-to-bar sets or work muscle-ups with volume, the Quad Ultra make a real difference. In that usage range the grip quality translates into extra reps and where the top-tier investment has measurable return.

Someone who trains on their own clean bar

The Quad Ultra shine especially when the bar is predictable: your regular box, your home rig, well-maintained facilities. In those conditions, no other model matches their feel.

Someone who wants to avoid chalk

If cracked hands bother you, you prefer not to stain your equipment or you train in places without a chalk bucket, the Quad Ultra are the model that best addresses that need. Their chalk-free grip is the most powerful in the Velites catalog.

When NOT to choose the Quad Ultra

The Quad Ultra are powerful precisely because they maximize grip, but that same characteristic makes them less recommendable in some scenarios:

  • If you usually train with chalk: by adding chalk you lose part of the benefit of their texture and they may slip more than expected. Better to choose Quad Pro or Quad Carbon.
  • If your rig has very pronounced knurling: the excessively firm contact can be uncomfortable in long sessions. Quad Carbon cushions better on those bars.
  • If you compete in events with strict regulations: check the event rules first; the Quad Competition are specifically designed to meet regulations.
  • If you're starting with pull-ups: make sure your technique is solid before investing in the most premium model. The All Terrain cover the first months without problem and at lower cost.
